II. Narrative Description of Community
Pawtucket faced significant disparities in many of the categories measured above. The infant mortality rate (7.3 per 1,000 births) is slightly worse than Rhode Islands (6.3 per 1,000). A huge disparity related to this is the teen birth rate, which is 32.6 per 1,000 teens versus only 19.1 per 1,000 in Rhode Island overall. Safety issues are also of higher concern in Pawtucket. the infant neglect rate per 1,000 children is 16.7, compared with 10.7 in Rhode Island. This may then contribute to the fact that children are not as often present during domestic violence conflicts (22% of the time in Pawtucket versus 29% of the time in Rhode island). The incarceration rate of parents, however, is slightly above the Rhode Island average, but overall not much different. Students in pawtucket tend to be less proficient by the time they reach eighth grade than those in other parts of Rhode Island, at 52% vs. 65% in reading and 35% vs 53% in math. The graduation rate is also significantly less at 57% compared to Rhode Island's 74%.
As far as income in Pawtucket, levels are below average while poverty rates are intensely above average. The race of people in Pawtucket would not be considered very diverse. It is 66% white and contains small percentages of other ethnic backgrounds. Hispanics are represented by 18.1% in this district of Pawtucket.
